Lockout is the process of physically neutralizing all energy sources on a piece of machinery or equipment, in order to render it inoperable before any maintenance or repair work is performed on it.
If a piece of equipment or machinery can accidentally or unexpectedly start up during maintenance, then its energy source must be isolated and controlled through an established lockout procedure.
Without proper knowledge and awareness of lockout procedures, workers could be severely injured or killed. It is important for all employees, including those not performing the lockout, to be familiar with procedures in order for everyone to stay safe.
